Throwing coffee pucks on house plant soil maye be ill advised. Mold can grow on the puck in the moist environment and the sweet rot can attract fruit flies. Also, acidity from the grinds can be detrimental to the health of the potted plant which in some cases may not be intentional.

I have scooped off the coffee pucks and put them in a plastic container, kept outside on my balcony, with holes drilled in the bottom so excess moisture can get out. Maybe it will compost better there and if it does I can spread some of the resulting material on the potted plant soil.

Net als mensen worden wormen actief van cafeïne. En actieve wormen hebben meer honger. Volgens sommige wormenkenners mag je compostwormen niet te veel koffieprut geven. Omdat ze daar gestresst van raken. Anderen zweren juist bij koffieprut, omdat het de voortplanting zou stimuleren: Ook op sex gebied worden de wormen schijnbaar actiever van cafeïne.

Er zijn professionele wormenkwekerijen die wormen bijna geheel op koffieprut laten leven. Dat kan omdat de verhouding koolstof /stikstof bijna ideaal is. Koffie hoort wel bij d egroene ghroep maar je hoeft er relatief minder bruin materiaal bij te doen. Dit alles gezegd hebbende is het voor de gemiddelde wormenbak-bezitter denk ik gewoon een leuk weetje. Doe vooral je koffieprut in je wormenbak. Wellicht verhoogt het het composteertempo èn de omvang van je kolonie. Daarnaast is de korrelstructuur goed voor de darmen en dus voor de vertering. Maar een dieet van alleen maar koffieprut lijkt me toch wat eenzijdig.

 

PS One month later the bucket was almost full, and teeming with big fat worms. The population maybe could not find enough composted food and a number of worms attempted to get out of the system to find other living space. On my barren balcony there is no such ground to find and the adjoining roof does not have a good living environment either, so I took the system to a nearby park and emptied it in between trees where plants covered the soil:

Finished Pavoni & Fuji PXG4 pid: Probe Inside the Ring

Delicious cup: all the work was well invested! At the end of the previous blog about the pressostat and PID working together , I mentioned that I would like to clean up the xmas tree of wires and have as few cables and probes as possible to visually disturb the classic design of the La Pavoni. Getting rid of the probe that was fastened with copper tape to the top of the brew group was a priority. I wanted to hide a new probe in the cooling fin as close as possible to the brew group. This morning I asked Tije if he could do that. He would need to drill a straight hole of 3mm diameter in the 4mm inner ring of the cooling fin that sits as a tight clamp around the brew group. Always the optimist, Tije set to work: First, Tije made a piece of aluminum to fit the inside of the ring.
