Miroslav Zikmund’s 100th birthday [RADIO]
Youtube version:
Jiri, OK2RZ is active as OL100ZH, 8 February to 28 February 2019, Celebrating Miroslav Zikmund’s 100th birthday.
Miroslav Zikmund (born 14 February 1919) and Jiří Hanzelka (24 December 1920 – 15 February 2003), known as Zikmund and Hanzelka, met at the Prague university and became close friends, planning their world travels.
They managed to actually go for their dream, driving a superb silver car, the Czech Tatra 87 and they published stories about their experiences, with photography, film and radio reporting.
Selling millions of books, they were what today we would call bloggers / influencers with a huge audience who could experience what it's like to go to faraway places, to roam the earth and be self made heroes of their time.
At the end of their first trip they returned home to a country that had fallen under Soviet oppression.
Considered harmless by the communist oppressor, they were still allowed to travel and they were again on their way from 1959 well into 1964, reporting from Indonesia, Irian Jaya, Japan, and the Soviet Union. Besides sending home articles and photos they also wrote radio scripts which were aired in Czech, with actors reading their parts.
Since the rest of the population at home was under a Soviet lockdown, living a severely restricted life, their stories were more than welcome.
In 1965, the duo slightly overplayed their hand, reporting on corruption in Soviet Russia to the dismay of mr Brezjnev (the Putin of that era), and later in 1968 during the Prague Spring when they took an anti-soviet position. In retaliation, they were forced to halt their public life until the 1989 Velvet Revolution, and as the Soviet government fell apart they were once again elevated to stardom, able to continue their travels.
