In between
In between the pages of my book I notice a man and a woman chatting and laughing at a table next to mine. They are middle aged like me and seem to be on a first date together. As the man goes to wait in line for another round of coffee, the woman sits still, looking very tired all of a sudden. Almost desolate.
He returns. "I saw you looking at those pastries as if you were in love", she tells him. "Go ahead and have one!"
Their happy conversation continues, each explaining all that's new about themselves to the other.

He was thinking about the end of the pastries. Seems like a balanced couple.
So did she go get one and prove her real love for the pastry and THEN talk
incessantly (Ethel), or did she remain there and brighten up solely for his
company and perhaps his (Billy) future love? You left out the BEST part.
Either way, guilty love. For him or the pastry. Or (drum roll) - both.
